PVC Edging
PVC edge banding is the most common choice for commercial furniture, offering a good balance of impact resistance, flexibility, and cost. It's available in thicknesses from around 0.4mm up to 3mm — thicker bands stand up better to knocks and repeated cleaning, which is why 2mm and above is common on furniture that sees heavy daily use, such as reception desks and washroom cubicles.
ABS Edging
ABS banding performs similarly to PVC but doesn't contain chlorine, making it easier to recycle and a common specification choice where sustainability credentials matter. It bonds well with EVA and PU hot-melt adhesives and holds up to a similar range of impact and moisture conditions as PVC.
ABS vs PVC: Which Should You Choose?
Both hold up well in commercial use, so the choice usually comes down to two things: sustainability requirements and finish. ABS is chlorine-free and easier to recycle at end of life, which is why it's increasingly specified where a project has environmental or sustainability credentials to meet — public sector, education and healthcare contracts often ask for it specifically. PVC remains the lower-cost option and has a slightly wider range of finishes and colour-matches readily available, which can matter for large multi-room projects where an exact match across every component is needed. On pure performance — impact resistance, moisture resistance, bond strength — there's little to separate them at equivalent thickness, so for most washroom, education and hospitality projects either will perform well; the decision usually comes down to whether recyclability or finish-matching availability is the priority.
Veneer and Laminate Edging
Real wood veneer or laminate edging is used where the finished look needs to match a veneered or laminated face — a thin strip in the same material keeps the join nearly invisible. It's less impact-resistant than PVC or ABS, so it tends to suit lower-traffic furniture such as office desks and display units rather than washroom or hospitality fit-outs.
Laser Edge and Zero-Join Finishes
Laser edging fuses a functional layer within the band itself directly to the panel using heat, rather than a visible glue line. The result is a near-invisible seam that resists moisture ingress better than traditional glued joins, because there's no adhesive line for water to work into over time. It costs more than standard hot-melt banding but is increasingly specified for washroom and healthcare furniture where hygiene and long-term moisture resistance are priorities.
Getting the Choice Right
The right edging option comes down to where the furniture will live and how hard it will be used. For high-traffic commercial and hospitality settings, a thicker PVC or ABS band gives the best balance of durability and cost. For detailed or painted furniture, veneer or laminate edging keeps the finish consistent. And where moisture and hygiene are the priority — washrooms, healthcare, food-prep areas — laser edging is worth the extra cost for the seal it provides.
